In April, 2019, a group of 21 high school students from St. Peter Claver, Guardian Angels, St. Rita’s, along with 7 adult chaperones flew to Montgomery and Selma, Alabama, to visit numerous civil and voting rights’ historical sights: Legacy Museum, National Memorial for Peace and Justice (Lynching Museum), Civil Rights Memorial Center, Rosa Parks Museum (Troy University), Freedom Riders Museum, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, National Voting Rights Museum and Institute, Slavery and Civil War Museum and Memorial Grave site of Viola Liuzzo who died fighting for voting rights.
Initiated by Everlyn Wentzlaff, this five-day trip to Montgomery and Selma was eight months in the planning by Estelle Jones, Yusef Mgeni, Gary Gullikson, Ann Papenfuss-Wing and Everlyn.
One last reminder: Mary Speaks: Background: The Pen is Mightier than the Sword:
“I began to write MARY SPEAKS in August 2015. It had been a long, hot, and violent summer. The rash of shootings of unarmed black men over 3 years came to a tipping point with the death of Mike Brown in Ferguson, MO. That one incident pushed pen to paper. I had read reports that said his body had been left out on the streets uncovered for hours and that his mother tried desperately to get through to see if it was indeed her son. Something in the story felt familiar. I was immediately reminded of the story of the crucifixion. In that moment, I saw Mary at the foot of the cross and it hit me. All of these Black mothers were Mary.” - Angela Polite
Mary Speaks was held at Concordia University from March 3rd-5th, 2023
